Gender Movements Years ago women were known to be housewifeââ¬â¢s. Women stayed at home, cooked, cleaned and took care of the children. Women did things at home while the husband went to work to make money to pay the bills. Things have changed a lot these years. Women work just as hard as men. Women are responsible for bills and making sure the family is taken care of. These changes happened because of womenââ¬â¢s protests and feminist activist. Women now have the same rights as men. Women can work, vote and run for different positions. Even though women have the right to run for different positions there is still few women in power. Another reason women donââ¬â¢t vote as a block for female candidates for public office is because some women feel that women are less power oriented than men (Pfeffer, 2010). Some women may feel that certain positions would be better handle by a man. That if a man held the positions that he would get more accomplished or people would listen and respect what a man had to say. We have come a long way as women but there are still other women who arenââ¬â¢t convinced that women as a whole have what it takes to fill these positions of power. The mind set of some women will keep them from putting other women in positions of power because of how they feel or believe. Women donââ¬â¢t vote as a block for female candidates because some women are optimist feminists (Sullivan, 2008). Some women donââ¬â¢t question the fact that another women can become a person of power (Sullivan, 2008). They look at the facts that half of busi ness and medical school classes are women (Sullivan, 2008). That women are CEOs and university presidents (Sullivan, 2008). On the first of September, cousin Alexis passed away. My parents were answering phones and replying to texts. Almost everyone on the opposite end of the line was crying. They told me that Kuya Alexis was my older cousin who would visit the house to see my parents whenever he had the time. They told me he would play and talk to me for hours, and so did his girlfriend Ate Nika. Then they told me that at 10:00 pm last night both of them were shot by three robbers in their house in Quezon City. It was said that their maid let the robbers in and left with them after theyââ¬â¢d stolen jewelry and their laptops. My mom started crying, and my dad left the room. I wondered about how the robbers knew the maid. My mom and dad bought clothes for Alexis and Nika to wear at their funeral. My mom showed me Alexisââ¬â¢ tie; ââ¬Å"This is the first tie I ever gave your father.â⬠It was the ugliest tie Iââ¬â¢ve ever seen, but I guess that made sense for him to wear it. My sister Pimee called saying that she was going to come home for the wake, I was so excited I cleaned my room that we shared for her arrival. She didnââ¬â¢t end up staying with me. On the day of the ceremony, the sky was clear and the sun was shining. We were all asked to wear white, which was weird because Iââ¬â¢m pretty black was the color to wear for these kinds of things. The mass was a blur. The two coffins were beside the altar, but I couldnââ¬â¢t see the bodies; there were too many flowers around them. During the eulogy, several people who knew Alexis went up to speak. Some of them laughed, some of them cried. It was hard at times to understand their stuttering. Most of them called Alexis Eggy, supposedly because his head was shaped like an egg. The wake was unusual. Peopleââ¬â¢s faces were damp, their eyes red and watery, and yet they were still eating snacks and holding on to drinks, as if it was a party. People were mingling, greeting each other with a sad smile and sharing each otherââ¬â¢s connection to Kuya Alexis. I saw Nikaââ¬â¢s father and brother talking with Kuya Alexisââ¬â¢ siblings and mother. I couldnââ¬â¢t explain the expressions on their faces; it was as if the world ended. ââ¬Å"Isabel!â⬠My mom called. He looked like he was going to wake up, so I waited. I got impatient, and before I knew it, my face was damp like the others too. My mom heard me and ran to comfort me. I told her I need to speak to Ate Bettina, Kuya Alexisââ¬â¢ older sister. My mom took me to Bettina and told her that I had something to say. When we found her, I tapped her shoulder and told her this: ââ¬Å"Once, when I got home from ballet at around 10 p.m. Kuya Alexis and Ate Nika where talking to Dad and Mom after dinner. I sat beside Kuya Alexis. He asked me how ballet was and I told him that I wanted to quit. I told him that my classmates keep telling me I should get a life because I can never join them on weekends. I can never go to parties or hang out with them. Itââ¬â¢s just school and ballet, school and ballet. Then Kuya Alexis asked me, ââ¬ËDo you love ballet?ââ¬â¢ And I said yes. Then he said to me, ââ¬ËThen keep on doing it no matter what anyone tells you. Answer 1: A) Employees are one of the most important assets of an organisation and it is essential that the HR manager should look at ensuring sufficient level of employee engagement so that their maximum overall utilisation can be achieved. There are a range of strategies that could be employed by the managers in performing the employee engagement. An analysis of the existing literature indicates that the favourable employee engagement strategies that could be employed by HR managers include investment in training and development, respecting the needs of employees with respect to work life balance, creating favourable working conditions, creating an environment of diversity and inclusion and HR managers could also foster rewards and recognition programs in ensuring that sufficient level of employee engagement is being promoted within organisation. These techniques could be utilised for the purpose of achieving improved employee engagement within organisation (Dickson, 2010). With respect to the effectiveness of these strategies are concerned, they are highly effective in facilitating higher level of engagement of employees. As for instance, the strategy of training and development is crucial in enhancing the skills and abilities of employees which in turn would encourage them to contribute their higher level of efforts in achieving organisational goals. Similarly, the strategies of favourable work conditions and work life balance including the inclusion and diversion strategies are crucial from the point of view of achieving higher level of satisfaction within the organisational employees, and they could therefore be persuaded in a highly efficient manner towards accomplishing the organisational goals positively. These strategies in the form of creating positive working environment acts as a motivating factor to employees because it creates a sense of feeling within them that they are highly valued within organisation, and as a result, they focuses towar ds achieving organisational goals by creating values through their efforts and initiatives (Bridger, 2014). B) An organisation that has utilised employee engagement in a highly efficient manner as selected is Arcadia Group. An analysis of Arcadia Group indicates that it is a UK based fashion retailing company, and the company has also deployed a range of strategies aimed at achieving enhancement with regard to engaging its employees in contributing efficiently towards accomplishing organisational goals. As for instance, employee engagement is achieved in terms of strategies adopted by the company such as employee volunteering and the training and development. There are employee volunteering events that are being conducted across the Wallis brand of Arcadia Group, and such strategy has been highly efficient to the company in engaging its employees towards serving its customers. Apart from this employee volunteering, there has also been the application of training and development strategy that has also been carried out by the organisation with a view to enhance the abilities of its employees to perform and this has therefore been a crucial factor aimed at accomplishing organisational goals in a positive manner. The training provision by the company is mainly for all its employees and this is an important way in which employee engagement is being ensured at Arcadia (Arcadia Employee Engagement, 2015). Answer 2: A) Porter five forces is an important tool in assessing the industry effectiveness as it analyses different important aspects related to the industry performance so that its impact over organisations performance can be better assessed. There are five important elements included within it such as bargaining power of buyers which explains about the bargaining power as hold by the buyers in the industry. The bargaining power of suppliers reflects about the power as held by suppliers in the industry in influencing price and other such factors. Rivalry among the existing firms is also an important indicator and it mainly explains the level of competition within the existing firms in the industry. Threat of substitute explains the existence of similar products that can be consumed in lieu of the core products as offered by the company, and finally, the threat of new entrant explains the possibility of entering newer players in the industry. B) The application of Porter five forces in respect to Ryanair is performed as follows: Bargaining Power of Buyers: The buyer power in respect to airline industry is significantly higher and this is mainly because of availability of large number airlines providing high quality services across different segments such as premium class customers, low cost airline services etc. In respect to Ryanair, its leading position in the low cost airline services indicates lower bargaining power available to buyers (Shaw, 2012). Bargaining Power of Suppliers: The suppliers bargaining power is also lower because of the higher level of competition being exercised by large number of industry players. Ryanair in particular also faces the threat of competition in the form of competition from low cost airline service providers such as Southwest airline, Jetstar etc (Ahlstrom and Bruton, 2009). Rivalry among Existing Firms: The threat of rivalry within the existing firm indicates that it is significantly higher within the airline operators. Ryanair is serving low cost market model and there are a range of low cost service providers competing against each other such as Ryanair, Southwest Airline, British Airways, Jetstar etc (Major Airlines of the World, 2012). Threat of Substitutes: The threat of substitute as faced by airline operator such as Ryanair is lower because travelling via airline is essential to the travellers in reaching their destination in a positive manner. As a result, the threat of substitute to Ryanair is lower as people are required to travel via airline services in ensuring that they reaches their destination on time. Barriers of New Entry: The barriers to new entry is higher especially in respect to airline industry and this is mainly because of the fact that there is a need for huge investment that is required to be made in participating within such airline industry. This creates barriers in the process of successfully participating within the airline industry and thereby the threat to Ryanair in terms of entry of new player is lower.
